About me

Therapy is a conversation, it is about wandering and wondering through our thoughts, feelings and behaviours and consider how these may impact on our ability to live with and manage the challenges in our lives. The conversations are not always easy , but the focus throughout therapy is to encourage and create a safe, non judgmental environment and for you to feel confident enough to bring up those issues which you may not feel able to share elsewhere. This requires creativity and confidence in self -reflection, sometimes humour (!) but always compassion and understanding, self care and patience to try something different but to do so knowing there is on-going honesty, support. The ultimate aim is moving towards active change and greater fulfilment in our lives.

I currently work as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the NHS. I have nearly 30 years of experience working in the NHS/ private practice, in both the UK and abroad.

During my career I have developed and offered therapy, led and managed an extensive range of health / psychology services as well as offering psychological supervision to medical, allied health professionals ( nurses, OTs and physios) and psychological staff ( both individual and as teams) in order to develop strategies to best recognise and support patients re- psychological issues.

I take a collaborative approach which means that at each stage of our work together, we need to ensure that what we do and what I offer makes sense to you and fits your needs. To this end , I am happy to have an initial conversation to get a general idea of your needs ( this takes about 30mins ). This also allows you to ask any questions that you might have about the therapeutic process before we begin, giving you the chance to feel informed and clear about what is involved.

Interventions all start with clinical assessment in order to help myself and my patients to understand their problem and how it impacts on their lives. This helps us to understand exactly what influences the problem and the intervention needed to manage. This can take one or two sessions and it is from this that we can work out the best way forward. I work on a practice-and-review model in order to allow patients to apply what they have learned and continually review and identify additional needs. I find working towards a set number of sessions and reviewing helps facilitate this aim but am happy to work with what suits you.
