About me
Dr. Gavin Wright (MBBS, PhD, FRCP) is a senior consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist with extensive clinical and academic expertise in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of complex Liver and Gastrointestinal disorders. Since 2011, he has led liver services across the Mid & South Essex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (population 1.3 million) and broadly oversees the management of patients with complex Gastrointestinal, Liver and General Medical conditions.
Dr. Wright graduated from Kings College London (KCL) with an MBBS in 1996 and subsequently completed specialist training in Hepatology and Gastroenterology in the prestigious North Thames training rotation, with posts at Royal London Hospital (RLH), University College London Hospital (UCLH) and the Royal Free Hospital (RFH), including the RFH liver transplant unit. Dr. Wright was a recipient of the European Association for the study of Liver (EASL) 'Sheila Sherlock Fellowship award' in 2006 for research, earning a PhD in Liver Medicine from the Institute of Hepatology at UCL in 2010. His doctoral research focused on the pathophysiology of Hepatic Encephalopathy, advancing understanding of the interactions between inflammation, ammonia metabolism and cerebral oedema in liver failure, and other complications of advanced liver disease. He holds Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and has been recognised with successive 'National Clinical Excellence Awards' since 2017 in recognition of his significant contributions to NHS services and patient care. Dr. Wrights clinical interests encompass the full spectrum of Gastrointestinal and Liver disease:
1) Disorders effecting the Oesophagus, Stomach, and Bowels (e.g., Coeliacs disease, Barrett's disease, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Dysmotility disorders, Peptic ulcer disease, Polyposis, Pre-cancerous lesions, Functional and Inflammatory bowel disorders).
2) Liver disorders, e.g., Viral Hepatitis, Cirrhosis and its complications, Autoimmune Liver conditions, Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease, general Metabolic Liver Disorders, and pre- and post-transplant care.
Dr Wright is an accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) colonoscopist and highly experienced in advanced upper and lower diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, especially in the management of Gastrointestinal haemorrhage (e.g. DANIS stenting, glue-injection, variceal banding, etc.). Dr. Wright is also a member of the NICE 'Adoption and Impact Reference Panel and National Specialist Interest Group for Autoimmune Liver Disease.
Dr. Wright is involved in multidisciplinary Gastrointestinal and Liver care pathways and participates in National and International clinical trials, with Honorary Consultant and Senior Clinical Lecturer roles at KCL, UCLH, and the RFH. He has numerous high-impact publications in Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and General Medical journals, contributing to evidence-based practice, greater access to best treatment, and improving patient outcomes. Dr. Wright also oversees the education and training of future clinical and PhD research trainees.
