About me
I am a consultant clinical oncologist in Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and a Professor of Radiation Oncology in King’s College London. I trained in clinical oncology in Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital, University College London Hospital, and Mount Vernon Hospital before my appointment as a consultant in 2001.
I focus my clinical practice and research on the treatment of lymphoma with both chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I have an extensive experience in advanced radiotherapy techniques which treats lymphoma more accurately whilst reducing side effects.
My research interest is focused on advanced radiotherapy techniques and the use of imaging in lymphoma. I published the first UK study which pioneered the use of early response assessment by PET scanning so that treatment can be tailored to the individual patient. I have developed and implemented new radiotherapy techniques combining an innovative arc technique and deep inspiration breath hold together with image-guided delivery of treatment. Combining these techniques improve targeting of radiation and reduce radiation dose to normal tissues making radiotherapy to the mediastinum much safer and highly accurate. I am also accredited in the use of Proton Beam Therapy from The University of Pennnsylvania.
I am a founding member of the International Lymphoma Radiation Oncology Group (ILROG) and a member of its steering and executive committees. ILROG promotes best practice in radiotherapy of lymphoma and supports education and research in the field at an international level. Nationally, I chair the UK Lymphoma Radiotherapy Group (UK-LRG) steering committee. I am a co-author of several influential international guidelines in lymphoma; the international imaging guidelines and guidelines for modern radiotherapy in Hodgkin Lymphoma including; Hodgkin Lymphoma, Definition of radiation target in lymphoma, Optimal imaging for Lymphoma, Proton Beam Therapy and COVID-19 guidelines.
I have a passion for teaching and have organised national and international meetings under the auspices of the Royal College of Radiologists, UK National Cancer Research Institute and UK-LRG, and the European Society of Radiation Oncology (ESTRO) and ILROG and have lectured in more than 15 countries. I have been chair of the haematology track for the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) annual meeting scientific committee 2014-2020.
