About me

Dr Nadir Abbas is a distinguished Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust and Director of Liver and Gut Services at House of Health. With over 12 years of specialist training, 47 peer-reviewed publications, and direct contributions to national clinical guidelines, Dr Abbas is an internationally recognised clinician-researcher who combines cutting-edge expertise with patient-centred, compassionate care.

Dr Abbas holds exceptional depth of expertise in complex liver disease. In autoimmune liver conditions, he led a landmark UK-wide study across 457 patients at 12 centres, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (2023), and has published widely on Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis including reviews on emerging treatments and advanced imaging. He is an expert in the acute and long-term management of Autoimmune Hepatitis, including complex immunosuppression regimens. He also holds a PhD in autoimmune liver diseases; in particular interest in PBC.

In cirrhosis and portal hypertension, Dr Abbas is first author on influential national guidance for surgical risk assessment in cirrhosis published in Frontline Gastroenterology (2023), and holds specialist expertise in managing all complications of decompensated liver disease including ascites, hepatic encephalopathy and variceal bleeding using advanced prognostic scoring systems including MELD, UKELD and VOCAL-Penn.

He provides comprehensive management of the full spectrum of liver conditions including viral hepatitis (A, B, C and E) with antiviral therapy, fatty liver disease (MASLD/NAFLD), drug-induced liver injury, metabolic liver disease, liver cancer surveillance, and pre- and post-transplant care.

Alongside his specialist hepatology practice, Dr Abbas offers expert management across the full breadth of gastroenterology including inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome and functional gut disorders, coeliac disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Barrett's oesophagus, peptic ulcer disease, pancreatic disorders, malabsorption syndromes, abdominal pain, bloating, and chronic diarrhoea and constipation.

What truly distinguishes Dr Abbas is his ability to bridge NHS tertiary-level expertise with genuinely accessible, personalised private care. At House of Health, patients benefit from same-day or next-day consultant appointments, with every consultation conducted personally by Dr Abbas no junior doctors, no delays, no compromise. Patients have direct access to a dedicated multidisciplinary team including specialist GI and liver dietitians, consultant radiologists, nurse practitioners and gut-focused hypnotherapists, alongside cutting-edge on-site diagnostics including ultrasound, comprehensive blood testing and stool testing all under one roof.

Dr Abbas accepts new patient referrals across the full spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology, including complex and rare conditions, tertiary-level cases, and second opinion consultations. His practice is informed by the very latest clinical evidence because every patient deserves care at the forefront of modern medicine.
