About me
Ms Rahman is a highly skilled consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in the management of cataracts, complex cataracts, and vitreoretinal surgery. With over three decades of experience, she has established herself as a leading expert in these highly specialised areas.
Ms Rahman received her specialist ophthalmology training at the Oxford Eye Hospital, where she developed a particular interest in diseases of vitreous and retina. She went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the same institution.
In September 2002, Ms Rahman was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, where she established a state-of-the-art Vitreoretinal Service from the ground up, providing comprehensive retinal care to patients in Huddersfield, Halifax, and the surrounding areas. After 20 years of dedicated service, she has recently retired from NHS practice and continues to work in private practice.
Cataract formation is an inevitable consequence of vitrectomy surgery, and Ms Rahman has a special interest in combined cataract and vitreoretinal surgery, allowing patients to avoid a second operation following vitrectomy. She was among the first surgeons in the UK to offer small-incision 23-gauge (0.6 mm) vitrectomy, enabling faster visual rehabilitation. She is currently one of the few retinal surgeons performing 27-gauge (0.4 mm) vitrectomy, offering patients a minimally invasive and virtually painless surgical experience.
Ms Rahman has also pioneered non-posturing macular hole surgery and places great emphasis on outcome auditing, consistently maintaining above-average success rates in her surgical practice.
She regularly presents her work at national and international conferences and has published over 50 abstracts and 35 peer-reviewed papers across a wide range of ophthalmic topics.
Beyond her clinical work, Ms Rahman remains deeply committed to advancing ophthalmology. She serves as an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow and has undertaken several leadership and educational roles, including serving as Audit lead and Clinical lead, reflecting her dedication to maintaining high standards of patient care and professional excellence.
