About me
Mr. Abir Bhattacharyya was appointed as a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Whipps Cross University Hospital (Barts Health) in 1997. He was appointed Associate Director of Medical Education in 2009 and Royal College Surgical Tutor at Whipps Cross University Hospital in 2010. He was appointed Training Programme Director for Core Surgery in London by HEE /London Deanery in 2015 and as the Deputy Director of Medical Education from January 2017. He is a Council member of ENT UK and advises colleagues and trainees as the regional Royal College Professional Advisor (RSPA).
He has won numerous academic prizes during his undergraduate and postgraduate years and was awarded the Royal College Travelling Fellowship and other awards during his residency. He has also won recognition for his academic, clinical excellence and educational contributions as a consultant.
He has edited five postgraduate textbooks of Head and Neck Surgery and written a book for undergraduates and GPs (Highly commended and selected in the BMA Medical Book Awards 2012). The second edition of the popular GP text book was published in 2020. He recently edited the 10th edition of Recent Advances in Otolaryngology published in 2025.
In addition, he has numerous publications in peer reviewed journals and is on the Editorial Board and is a Trustee of the Journal of Laryngology and Otology. He is a member of the court of examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Intercollegiate Board in Otolaryngology.
Mr Bhattacharyya has a special interest in treating otological (ear) conditions for both adults and children and has extensive experience in management of complex otological diseases. This includes surgical management of hearing loss, e.g., stapedectomy for otosclerosis, ossiculoplasty, bone anchored hearing aids and surgery for cholesteatoma. His other interests in ENT are management of sinus disease and surgical treatment with functional endoscopic sinus surgery.
He has a particular interest in management of Voice Disorders and runs multidisciplinary Voice clinics at Whipps Cross Hospital and in the independent sector. He has carried out a number of laryngeal framework procedures to improve vocal function.
Mr Bhattacharyya completed his Master of Surgery in Otolaryngology at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Bombay and higher surgical training in the United Kingdom, during which he worked at centres of excellence including Institute of Laryngology and Otology, Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital.
In recognition of his contribution to the specialty he was awarded the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 2007. He has been a keynote and guest speaker at a number of international conferences and is a faculty member, course tutor/organizer of postgraduate courses in otolaryngology in UK and abroad.
As a peer determined marker of eminence in the field Mr Abir Bhattacharyya has been appointed as a Visiting Professor in prestigious Universities and as a Consultant ENT Surgeon to the High Commission of India in London.
