About me
My name is Dr Deanne Turner, and I am a qualified Counselling Psychologist registered with the HCPC. I have extensive experience working in secondary care within the NHS, both as a psychologist and a mental health nurse, in a wide range of mental health service settings including acute and rehabilitation psychiatric inpatient services; community mental health teams; and forensic settings and have recently started my own private practice working both online and in-person. I originally qualified as a solicitor, working in Aberdeen and Central Scotland as a Civil Court Practitioner. Following my own divorce, I realised that the world of law did not suit me, and changed my career path, graduating in 2010 with a First-class degree in psychology followed by an MSc in Health Psychology in 2011 and a degree in mental health nursing in 2016. Many, if not all, of my clients have experienced childhood or some form of relationship trauma, whether that be sexual, physical, verbal, or psychological abuse, or a mixture of all four. I seek to work with individuals to increase their understanding around the impact this has on their lives, how it can lead to chronic mental health issues including severe and chronic depression; anxiety; interpersonal issues; and excessive substance use, and to help them process and recover from their experiences. My aim is to explain and reduce the shame, guilt, and self-blame that individuals often feel.
I have recent experience in working with psychological trauma brought about by Covid and its effects on individuals, working to a model of psychological first aid, like that used in major traumatic incidents to help those affected. I gained experience in working with more immediate trauma brought on by changes in working practices, alongside personal issues, and domestic difficulties. I also have experience in working with a wide range of mental health issues including depression; anxiety disorders; obsessive-compulsive disorder; PTSD, and Complex-PTSD, along with low self-esteem; emotional dysregulation; low self-confidence; self-harm and suicidal ideation.
Areas of interest
Anxiety; Depression; PTSD; C-PTSD; OCD; Emotional Dysregulation; Low Self-Esteem; CFS/Fibromyalgia; Autism; ADHD; Burnout.
I work with teens age 13+ and all adults.
My main therapy focus is Schema Therapy; EMDR; CBT and Trauma Focused CBT; Person-Centred Therapy; and Compssion Focused informed Therapy.
