About me

Mr Ayman Gabr is an accomplished Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the West Suffolk Hospital, specialising in knee and hip surgery, sports injuries, and complex trauma. He has extensive expertise in managing soft tissue knee injuries, primary and revision knee arthroplasty, robotic hip and knee replacement, and knee preservation techniques.
He completed his specialist orthopaedic training in the North West, finishing with a six-month placement in hip and knee arthroplasty at the internationally renowned Wrightington Hospital, recognised as a centre of excellence for joint replacement. He went on to complete two internationally recognised fellowships. The first was a comprehensive one-year knee fellowship at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol where he gained advanced experience in both soft tissue knee surgery and primary and revision knee arthroplasty. He then undertook a year-long fellowship at University College London Hospital (UCLH) with Professor Fares Haddad where he developed expertise in robotic hip and knee replacement surgery. During this fellowship he also gained extensive experience in sports knee surgery, working with elite athletes. He further complemented his training with a trauma fellowship at the prestigious King's College Hospital Major Trauma Centre in London, refining his skills in managing complex trauma.
In addition to his surgical qualifications, Mr Gabr is dual qualified having completed a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine. He was awarded an MD from University College London (UCL) for his research on functional outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery� an area in which he remains a recognised authority. He is the first author of the UK National Ligament Registry's annual reports and associated publications. Mr Gabr has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers and delivered more than 50 national and international presentations. His research in ACL reconstruction was recently recognised when he was awarded a competitive research grant by the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) to lead a pioneering project developing a predictive model for outcomes of ACL surgery using national registry data.
His commitment to advancing orthopaedic knowledge has been further acknowledged through multiple prestigious travelling fellowships awards from the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT), and the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA), enabling him to visit world-leading centres in the United States, Germany, Austria, and France.
Mr Gabr's surgical repertoire includes total knee and hip replacement, partial knee replacement, revision knee arthroplasty, ACL reconstruction, knee preservation surgery such as high tibial osteotomy and meniscal repair, and patella stabilisation procedures including medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Gabr is dedicated to education and training. He holds a higher degree in medical education and serves as both a clinical and educational supervisor for junior trainees. He also regularly teaches on national courses, including the Advanced Knee Arthroscopy Course. He is currently the Clinical Governance and Research Lead for Orthopaedics at West Suffolk Hospital, where he continues to drive quality improvement and research initiatives.
