About us
Professor Alaghband is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon and fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) with a special interest in complex cataract and glaucoma surgery. His current NHS position, as a consultant, is at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He offers the entire range of glaucoma treatments, including expertise in traditional surgeries, such as trabeculectomy and tube surgery, and newer procedures, such as PreserFlo MicroShunt, laser procedures (SLT, laser iridotomy, laser iridoplasty, capsulotomy, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP) and cyclodiode) and a spectrum of innovative modern technologies, such as MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) including iStent, Hydrus and MINIject.
After graduating in Medicine over 20 years ago, Professor Alaghband undertook his ophthalmology training in Yorkshire, and some of the world's most renown institutions in London, such as St Thomas' and Moorfields Eye Hospitals. In addition, he received a Doctorate of Medicine-MD(res) from King's College London concentrating on the differing aqueous humour dynamics and healing processes for novel implantable glaucoma surgical devices.
He is principal and chief investigator to several national and international glaucoma clinical trials. He is a regularly invited speaker on national and international level and reviewer to several ophthalmic peer-reviewed journals. Professor Alaghband is the Eye journal section editor for glaucoma (the official journal of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists). He has received a number of awards including the RCOphth/NIHR best researcher of the year. He has more than an 50 peer reviewed publications and book chapters. He holds the esteemed position of examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in addition to holding a an honorary senior lecturer position at Hull-York Medical School. He has recently appointed as the prestigious professor-in-practice role at Durham University. He is a commissioned medical examiner for the British Paralympic Committee and a member of the RCOphth, ESCRS, AAO, UKEGS and EGS. Professor Alaghband is an advisor to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PSHO) for the NHS.
