About me

Dr Raj Amarnani is a consultant in Sport, Exercise & Musculoskeletal Medicine with additional expertise in rheumatology. He specialises in the diagnosis and non surgical treatment of joint, muscle, tendon and bone conditions, seeing patients with both acute injuries and long standing problems, from sports related trauma to complex arthritis care. Raj works as an NHS Consultant at Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust. He also holds leadership roles as President of the Royal Society of Medicine's Rheumatology &?Rehabilitation Section, medical advisor and trustee for the National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society, and member of two EULAR taskforces developing international guidelines on physical activity and fatigue in rheumatic diseases.

Clinical expertise and research

Raj manages the full spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions, including ligament sprains, fractures, bone stress injuries, osteoarthritis, tendinopathies and inflammatory arthritis. He is particularly skilled in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, ultrasound?guided injections and shockwave therapy, and integrates exercise based rehabilitation and personalised lifestyle advice into every treatment plan. His clinical interests span rheumatology and bone health, and he has published more than 60 peer reviewed papers and contributed to leading textbooks. Raj's work has been recognised with national and international awards, including the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine Association Prize, and he continues to help shape evidence?based treatments through his involvement in guideline development.

Leadership, teaching and sports experience

In addition to his NHS work, Raj has provided medical support to a wide range of elite organisations, including the England & Wales Cricket Board, West?Ham United FC, the Lawn Tennis Association, the Royal Ballet School, Super League Basketball, the Commonwealth Games and the London Marathon. While he enjoys working with professional athletes, he treats patients of all activity levels, helping them return to the sports and activities they love or simply maintain an active, pain?free lifestyle. He completed his medical degree at the University of Sheffield with honours and the highest mark in his cohort, holds an MSc in Musculoskeletal Sciences from the University of Oxford (Distinction) and postgraduate qualifications in musculoskeletal medicine and ultrasound, and is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (Rheumatology) and a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine. Raj is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer on the MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Queen?Mary University of London and teaches regularly at Imperial College London and University College London, helping train the next generation of musculoskeletal and rheumatology clinicians.

What to expect in your consultation

When you see Dr?Amarnani, you can expect a thorough, patient?centred assessment. He will take time to understand your symptoms, medical history and activity goals before performing a detailed musculoskeletal examination. Where appropriate, Raj uses diagnostic ultrasound during the consultation to provide real time insights into your injury or condition. He will explain the diagnosis and outline the most effective non?surgical treatment options, whether that involves ultrasound guided injections, shockwave therapy, rehabilitation exercises or referrals for further imaging. Raj collaborates closely with physiotherapists, strength and conditioning specialists and other healthcare professionals to ensure you receive a personalised, multidisciplinary plan aimed at restoring function and helping you return to the activities you enjoy.
