About me

Miss Madalina Pavel is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Glaucoma Surgeon currently working at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where she has been appointed since January 2026.

She previously worked at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, where she also served as Clinical Governance Lead for the South Sites.

Miss Pavel specialises in the diagnosis and surgical management of glaucoma, cataract surgery, and general ophthalmology. She performs a comprehensive range of tertiary-level glaucoma procedures, including laser treatments such as laser iridotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and cyclodiode. Her surgical expertise also includes trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage devices (including Baerveldt and Paul implants), and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including iStent inject, Preserflo microshunt, ELIOS laser treatment, and OMNI canaloplasty and trabeculotomy.

After completing her formal ophthalmology training in Romania in 2018, Miss Pavel joined the UK Specialist Register in 2019. She has worked in the United Kingdom since 2017, gaining broad clinical experience across several NHS Trusts, including Mid Yorkshire, Doncaster and Bassetlaw, and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She subsequently completed a two-year glaucoma fellowship at King's College Hospital, after which she was appointed first as a locum consultant and then as a substantive consultant.

Miss Pavel is actively involved in teaching and surgical training and has a strong interest in clinical governance, quality improvement, and patient safety. She has also contributed internationally through charitable glaucoma surgery at Tenwek Eye Hospital as part of a global health initiative supported by King's College Hospital.

Her clinical interests focus on complex glaucoma management and improving access to safe, evidence-based ophthalmic care.
