About me

Mr Derek Ho is a consultant ophthalmologist based in Cardiff, Wales, specialising in cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, corneal transplantation, and other corneal and conjunctival procedures. He is also the Consultant Lead for Cataract Services at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. Alongside his NHS consultant work, he also practises privately at Spire Cardiff Hospital and Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital.

He is a high-volume cataract surgeon, performing and supervising approximately 100 cataract operations each month. For suitable private patients, he offers same-day bilateral cataract surgery using needle-free topical anaesthesia, allowing rapid visual recovery with minimal discomfort.

He graduated from the University of Cambridge and completed his ophthalmology training in Wales, followed by advanced fellowship training in cornea and anterior segment surgery at Bristol Eye Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital.

As a Fellow of both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) and the European Board of Ophthalmology, Mr Ho is a dual board-certified eye surgeon. He also holds the UK specialist certificate in laser and refractive surgery (CertLRS), reflecting his expertise in advanced vision correction techniques.

He is a Surgical Skills Faculty Trainer at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, teaching and mentoring ophthalmology trainees nationally. Alongside his clinical work, he has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at national and international meetings. He is a member of UKISCRS and EuCornea.
