About me
Professor Abhay Rane OBE
Professor Rane has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust for the last 26 years. He is Professor of Urology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, and was Visiting Professor, Canterbury Christ Church University. As a researcher, he has authored 9 textbooks, 11 book chapters, and more than 200 articles on urological topics. He also has achieved ground-breaking change in laparoscopic surgery, including leading a team performing the first-ever single-port nephrectomy, which led to the development of the single-port robotic surgery platforms used widely today.
Professor Rane is elected as Registrar the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and was an elected member of Council of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS). A tutor on the MSc and FRCS (Urol) courses, he serves as an examiner of the Intercollegiate Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons and FRCS(Urol) exit examination for British urologists in training. Professor Rane was on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Urology International and the Journal of Endourology and is an article reviewer for 12 urological journals. An advisor to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) on laparoscopic urology, he was national urology lead on the NICE Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee.
For his work, Professor Rane has received several international awards as well as the BAUS Gold Medal from the British Association of Urological Surgeons. He remains the only urologist to be honoured as Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to laparoscopic surgery.
