About me
Mr Skyrme serves as the Lead Consultant Surgeon at The Horder Centre and is the Chairman of the Orthopaedic Medical Advisory Committee at the hospital. He joined The Horder Centre in 2004 and is currently the longest-serving hip surgeon at the institution.
At present, he is the second busiest combined hip and knee surgeon in England, performing over 650 joint replacement procedures annually. His clinical practice is now almost exclusively focused on hip and knee surgery, with specialist expertise in the treatment of hip and knee surgery as well as foot and ankle surgery.
Professional Training
Mr Skyrme received his medical education at the world-renowned Guy's Hospital in London, where he graduated in 1993 with a First-Class Honours degree in Radiological Sciences alongside his MBBS. He subsequently completed his higher surgical training through the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2003.
Hip Surgery
Mr Skyrme specialises in advanced techniques for complex hip surgery, with particular expertise in minimally invasive hip surgery (MIS), day-case hip replacement, and enhanced recovery protocols. Between 1 April 2023 and 31 March 2024, he performed 365 hip procedures. Recognised as one of the leading experts in the field, Mr Skyrme has published extensively on hip surgery and is listed on the National Joint Registry (NJR). His NJR data consistently places him among the top-performing hip surgeons in the country, with high patient satisfaction rates and low complication rates.
A strong advocate of rapid recovery pathways, Mr Skyrme emphasises early mobilisation and optimised pain management to support a quicker return to function following hip replacement surgery. He is supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team who share his commitment to patient-centred care and clinical excellence.
Knee Surgery
Mr Skyrme performs a high volume of knee procedures annually, including both total knee replacements and soft tissue arthroscopic surgeries. From 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024, he carried out over 300 total knee replacements and more than 150 arthroscopic procedures. His expertise includes the management of sports-related knee injuries. He has worked with the Football Association and a local Premier League football club, and has operated on professional footballers.
Mr. Skyrme is fully trained in robotic-assisted knee surgery using the ROSA Knee System (Zimmer Biomet), and routinely uses the Persona and Vanguard Knee Systems, which are patient-specific implants designed to optimise surgical precision and clinical outcomes. He works closely with his physiotherapy colleagues to deliver enhanced recovery through coordinated inpatient and home-based rehabilitation, ensuring optimal functional outcomes and high levels of patient satisfaction.
Knee Arthrosamid Injections
Mr Skyrme is a keen advocate of Arthrosamid injections for certain patients. Arthrosamid is an innovative treatment designed for individuals suffering from knee osteoarthritis. It can potentially provide long-lasting relief in knee arthritis pain and discomfort for some years enabling patients to enjoy an improved quality of life without the need for surgery. Not all patients are appropriate for this and Mr Skyrme will discuss with you the merits on a personal basis.
Foot and Ankle Surgery
In addition to his hip and knee practice, Mr Skyrme also performs foot and ankle procedures. He has published extensively in this area, with a particular focus on forefoot surgery. He is a member of the British Foot and Ankle Society and has lectured internationally on the management of forefoot pathologies.
Mr Skyrme has personally performed over 4,500 Scarf bunion procedures and is recognised for his pioneering work in lengthening Scarf osteotomy techniques for revision cases following failed bunion surgery.
