About me
I am a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH). I specialise in robotic and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for the treatment of complex upper gastrointestinal conditions including oesophageal and gastric cancer, gallstones and gallbladder disease, groin hernias, hiatus and paraoesophageal hernias, anti-reflux surgery, achalasia and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
At the NNUH I have established and lead the Upper Gastrointestinal Robotic Surgery service and have pioneered several firsts for the region. This was recently celebrated in an article by the Eastern Daily Press, highlighting the first Robotic Assisted Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy at NNUH, one of only five sites across the UK to offer this highly specialist surgery.
Surgical Training
I qualified from Imperial College London before completing higher surgical training in Surrey and Sussex. I then undertook a Robotic Surgery Fellowship in Newcastle upon Tyne, gaining advanced training in robotic techniques at one of Europe's largest oesophagogastric cancer centres.
Research & Publications
I completed a PhD at Imperial College London investigating the role of the gut microbiome in health and disease, including in obesity and diabetes and after gastrointestinal surgery. I was awarded the Sutherland-Earl Clinical Research Fellowship among several other grants and have published work in a number of high-profile journals including Gut, Nature Food and Annals of Surgery. I have ongoing research interests in the management of oesophagogastric cancer.
Teaching & Leadership
Alongside busy clinical work, I am actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate surgical teaching and training. I am the East of England Support Training Programme Director for Robotic Surgery and Endoscopy. I have supervised a number of research students and was awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Authority for my contributions to academic and clinical teaching of students.
