Qualifying from St. Mary's, London in 1992, he trained at UCL, Royal Free Hospital and St. Mark's Hospital. He became an accredited gastroenterology specialist in 2002, when he was awarded a PhD degree for his research into acute inflammation in Crohn's disease.

He has published widely on inflammatory bowel disease and was a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Inflammatory Bowel Disease 2006-2017. He was Chairman of the New Consultants Committee and a Council member at the Royal College of Physicians from 2009 to 2011. He is a member of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) guidelines committee, as of 2013; and Chairman 2015-2016. He is Principle Investigator for the UK IBD Twin Registry. In 2020 he founded a global health charity, called Kito Health that has developed an App to triage sick children in resource poor areas to seek medical care, which has now been released in the Kibera informal settlement in Nairobi, where it is being used by 100's of the incumbent nurses. He practices an evidence-based yet holistic approach and is well-liked by his patients.
