About me
Dr Dalila Malek is a highly skilled Consultant Dermatologist, practising in the NHS since 2006. Currently based at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and Spire Wellesley Hospital, she offers consultations for a wide range of dermatological conditions, with particular expertise in skin cancer diagnosis, dermoscopy, mole checks and skin surgery.
Dr Malek earned her primary medical qualification in 2005 from the University of Glasgow and subsequently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology, awarded by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. She is also accredited with a Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Health. Dr Malek is UK board-certified in Dermatology, having earned her Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). More recently, she completed a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in Cosmetic and Aesthetic Medicine at the University of South Wales with a Distinction. She has also completed specialised training in laser therapies for skin lesions and rejuvenation.
Throughout her career, Dr Malek has cultivated a deep interest in skin cancer and dermoscopy diagnostics. She has undergone advanced training in dermoscopy through the International Dermoscopy Society and the Australian Skin Cancer Symposium. She manages complex cases of skin cancer, and works closely with oncology and plastic surgery teams in a multidisciplinary approach. She acts a Chairing member of the Skin Cancer MDT for Basildon and Southend Hospitals, playing a key role in coordinating care for patients with challenging skin cancer presentations. Along with clinic consultations, Dr Malek also performs a weekly skin surgery clinic for skin lesion excisions, biopsies and curettage procedures.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr Malek has contributed to dermatology research, including a first-author publication on immune-related adverse events in a patient treated with pembrolizumab, published in the European Journal of Cancer: Skin Cancer. She has also collaborated on case series reporting on psoriasis as a side effect of checkpoint inhibitor therapy, published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology. Actively involved in quality improvement, she won the prestigious national Kuenssberg Audit Award in 2012 for an outstanding audit project and continues to lead self-audit initiatives to maintain high standards in dermatological care.
Dr Malek is an active member of several professional organisations, including the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), the International Dermoscopy Society (IDS), and the British Medical Laser Association (BMLA). Her commitment to education extends to mentoring junior doctors and dermatology trainees. She is particularly passionate about postgraduate education for GPs and regularly delivers teaching sessions on the early detection of skin cancer for local surgeries and Primary Care Networks (PCNs) in South East Essex.
In addition to her role chairing the Skin Cancer MDT, Dr Malek held an important leadership position as a member of the Dermatology Stewardship Group of the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board (ICB). She holds a Certificate in System Leadership awarded by the NHS Leadership Academy.
