About me

How I work
Individual therapy usually takes place at the same time each week. It's helpful to think of therapy as something we do together, collaboratively. Initially, we will develop a better understanding of your current circumstances, thoughts, feelings and what you hope to achieve, which will shape our approach to working together. The reason for any current challenges may be clear to you, such as experiencing a traumatic event or loss; or you may feel overwhelmed, unhappy, or anxious without being aware of a clear cause. Our focus could be on providing a regular space for you to express and process your feelings, while also considering what might help you cope during this difficult time. It's common to unknowingly repeat certain patterns of behaviour in our lives - patterns that can affect relationships with others and how kind (and unkind!) we are to ourselves. By gently uncovering these patterns, which are often linked to past experiences, I can support to engage with yourself and those around you with more awareness.

Experience
I have over 25 years' experience of working therapeutically, including working in the NHS as an occupational therapist, in mental health and dementia settings. I have experience in bereavement, sexual violence and NHS counselling settings. I've been in private practice as a counsellor & psychotherapist for 6 years. Alongside working in practice I'm a Senior Lecturer in Integrative Psychotherapy and am completing a PhD focusing on the effects of child sexual abuse on later life.

Areas of interest

I work with adults age 18+

As an integrative therapist, I draw on a blend of ways of working, including psychodynamic and humanistic approaches. A psychodynamic approach helps us understand how the past may be influencing your present, often in ways you're not fully aware of. A humanistic approach focuses on the inherent potential for growth within you. The aim here is to cultivate a nurturing environment that supports you to develop and feel better.

Examples of people I work with include those who: are experiencing anxiety and/or depression, are struggling following a loss such as a bereavement or relationship breakdown; feel stuck or overwhelmed; were abused (physically, emotionally, sexually) or neglected as children; find becoming a parent triggers difficult feelings around their own childhood; have caring responsibilities / a relative living with dementia; have dementia or a learning disability themselves.
