About me
I am a shoulder surgeon in the UK. I work at The Arm Clinic, based at HCA The Wilmslow Hospital.
I have been a specialist in shoulder surgery since 2001. My practice has evolved to specialise completely on sports and soft tissue injuries of the shoulder. Providing second opinions, treating complex cases and performing revision surgery makes up a large proportion of my work. I practice closely with similar colleagues who specialise in complex trauma and shoulder replacement surgeries, as well as therapists dedicated to complex shoulder management and elite sports injuries and rehabilitation.
My primary focus has always been to try my best for my patients, even when surgery is not the first option as most shoulder injuries can be treated with non-surgical means. As such, I also strive to educate and empower my patients, supported by my educational website ďż˝ www.shoulderdoc.co.uk.
Academically, I have written numerous books and contributed to the work of others on shoulder surgery and rehabilitation and am actively involved in research, with over 100 research publications. I have taught both undergraduate and postgraduate medical, sports therapy and sports medicine students. I hold the post of Honorary Professor with the University of Salford.
NOTE: I am not currently on the BUPA Open Referral Network as I failed to fulfil one of the criteria, which is that I have ordered more second MRI scans than 90% of other local upper limb surgeons within one year. I have explained to BUPA that over 35% of the patients coming to me are second opinions and tertiary referrals that have had previous inadequate MRI scans or previous interventions and require repeat scans, however this has had no effect. I am still in discussions with BUPA and hope to be able to see Open Referral patients again soon.
Reply from BUPA: : " You are in the highest 10% of consultants in your sub-specialty (UPPER LIMB) for the proportion of Bupa patients without a cancer diagnosis who have one or more repeats of MRI procedures within a year."
