About me
Mr William Wilson is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon with a specialist interest in treating sports injuries. He has completed international fellowship training in knee surgery and complex lower limb trauma in Melbourne, Australia. He is dual qualified in both Trauma & Orthopaedics and Sport & Exercise Medicine, holding membership of both Royal Colleges.
He has experience of treating a wide range of patients, including those with arthritic knee pain, recreational sportspersons through to international level athletes. For many years Mr Wilson has been team doctor for the Irish Football Association, acting as head of medical for the delegation to the UEFA European Championship Finals.
Brought up on a farm in County Antrim, Northern Ireland before undergraduate medical studies at University of Glasgow during which he undertook a research degree in Knee Anatomy, graduating in 2011. His Specialist Training in Trauma & Orthopaedics was in the prestigious West of Scotland Deanery. Mr Wilson has a strong academic background, commencing a formal period of research in 2018, contributing to a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of Strathclyde, focusing on the functional outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery. He is a member of several prestigious research societies for whom he regularly gives presentations to an international audience, and has received several awards and grants for his work. His research work is widely published in the top orthopaedic and sports medicine journals, with some of the key focus on ACL reconstruction, ACL repair and the use of the Internal Brace technique to promote accelerated rehabilitation.
Following completion of training in Orthopaedics, he commenced a period of specialist fellowship in Melbourne, Australia. The Orthosport Victoria Knee Fellowship is an internationally renowned position providing advanced training in all aspects of knee surgery, with a particular focus on sports injuries. Under the stewardship of Prof. Julian Feller, this involved the treatment of a high number of knee injuries in professional athletes. Following this, he completed a fellowship in complex lower limb trauma, at Royal Melbourne Hospital major trauma centre, supervised by Mr Andrew Oppy who is an expert advisor to the AO Trauma Group.
Mr Wilson works as an NHS Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics in NHS Ayrshire & Arran, where he lives with his wife and young family. In his spare time, he is well known in local sporting circles as a professional referee for the Scottish Football Association.
Mr Wilson treats patients with all conditions of the knee including sports injuries, joint pain and arthritis and is a specialist in a wide range of surgeries including arthroscopy, ACL, ligament repair/reconstruction, Internal Brace surgery, patella stabilisation, osteotomy and partial or total knee replacements, including the use of robotics.
