About me

Introduction
Hello. My name is Shaun and I am a Psychotherapist (UKCP registered) and Counselling Psychologist (HCPC registered and BPS chartered). I provide therapy in a safe and confidential environment, to collaboratively explore any issues and difficulties you may be experiencing. My approach is integrative: I adapt my approach to suit the client's needs and draw on a range of schools of psychology to work with each unique individual.

Experience
I have several years' experience working with clients experiencing a wide range of difficulties, from anxiety, depression and relationship issues to personality disorders. I work with both long and short-term clients, though I aim to build a long-term therapeutic relationship with my clients. In addition to my private practice, I have also worked at MIND (the mental health charity) and the NHS.

Qualifications
Doctor in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy by Professional Studies (DCPsych), Metanoia Institute / Middlesex University
Clinical Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy, Metanoia Institute
BA (Hons) in Psychology, University of South Africa
BSocSci in Psychology and Law, University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa

How I work
Ultimately, therapy is an opportunity to develop a greater understanding of who we are, and why we are the way we are. My integrative approach means that I draw on psychodynamic, humanistic, developmental and relational theory and practice to collaboratively explore the unique reality of each client, with compassion and curiosity, and without judgement. Exploring one's developmental history, for example, can help us to understand how early ways of adapting to the world might cause difficulties in the present, the adaptations no longer serving us as adults. Additionally, bringing unconscious processes into consciousness increases the likelihood that we can make different, more informed decisions in the present: Decisions that perhaps better serve us. The relational element of how I work means that some of the struggles the client experiences with others in the world (the macrocosm) are likely to manifest in the microcosm of the therapeutic space. These relational dynamics can then be explored in the "here-and-now" of the therapeutic relationship. This essentially means that the therapy space can act as an opportunity for clients to experiment with doing things differently.
