About me

Owen Bowden-Jones, CBE is a medical doctor, psychiatrist and researcher with more than 25 years of experience in helping people with mental health and substance use problems on their journey to recovery.

After qualifying in medicine, Owen worked in the Australian health system for three years before returning to London to undertake his psychiatry training on the Charing Cross and St Mary's rotation. He completed a Masters at Imperial College London and was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2013.

Owen founded the award-winning Club Drug Clinic in 2010, an innovative service for people experiencing harms from novel psychoactive substances, and has since published the world's first evidence review and clinical guidance on this topic. He has also developed and delivered international training on behalf of the European Union and United Nations.

National roles include President of the Society for the Study of Addiction and registrar at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Owen is the immediate past Chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs and recently completed a Policy Fellowship at the University of Cambridge. He has given evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee, all Party political Groups and House of Lords Committees.

Owen speaks frequently in the media about drug use and mental health including print, radio and television. He has been named the Royal College of Psychiatrists 'Communicator of the year' and was awarded a Health Foundation Leadership Fellowship. His clinical teams had been a finalist for 'Mental Health Team of the Year' (2019 BMJ awards) and 'Psychiatric Team of the Year' (2020 Royal College of Psychiatrists). Owen has received a National Clinical Excellence award continuously since 2014 and is a senior felloe at the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

As an honorary professor at University College London, Owen has been principal investigator on a number of large research and quality improvement grants. Mental health problems in young adults is a particular interest and Owen founded and runs two metal health clinics for students at Imperial College and University College London which have been co-produced with students and university staff. Publications include overseeing more than thirty reports for Government on illegal drug harms, two textbooks, several academic book chapters and a public-facing book for parents. He lectures widely both nationally and internationally.

Clinically, he works both in the NHS and private practice, with expertise in substance use problems, depression, anxiety problems, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder and trauma.

Owen received a CBE for services to addiction rehabilitation and public service in the 2025 King's birthday honours
