About me

My name is Marton Kara and I hold a master's degree in psychology, a post-graduate degree in hypnotherapy and a PGDip in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy - DBT. I work as a HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist and a Hypnotherapist. Currently, I am also a student of the London School of Systemic and Family Constellations.

I offer hypnotherapy, talk therapy, individual DBT and counsellingin English and in Hungarian online and in my offices in Chiswick and Wimbledon, London.

My goal as a therapist is to work together with you in your own pace to discover your own internal resources for personal growth to help you understand yourself better and lead a more fulfilling, emotionally balanced life. I consider my therapeutic approach integrative, based on humanistic principles with a strong emphasis on the importance of the therapeutic relationship and a systemic approach. I tend to think of each person I work with as a unique and irreplaceable mosaic-pattern puzzle thus I treat them with great care and respect. My main area of expertise is hypnotherapy, but I also use elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy, DBT and psychodrama. I feel most comfortable incorporating dreams, imagery, symbols, and other unconscious material in my therapeutic work, but can be rather rational and goal-oriented depending on what I feel would help you the most. I am also interested in spirituality and have had training in shamanic practices at The Foundation for Shamanic Studies Europe.

I have been an active psychologist since 2016, having held a voluntary post in oncology for four years providing supportive therapy in a team of professionals. Later on, I began working with patients on an adult psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) and in acute inpatient care services experiencing severe and enduring mental health difficulties such as psychosis or bipolar disorder. I have also been working with people experiencing emotional and relational difficulties in the community. as well as with refugees in the field of mental health. I have also been working closely with an Autism Team in the NHS, providing support for people on the spectrum. I have extensive experience in the management of common mental health problems such as chronic stress, bereavement, emotional difficulties, trauma, impulsivity control, anxiety, adjustment disorder, sleep disorder, pain management, and recovering from serious illnesses. I am also interested in spirituality and hold an open mind for such practices.

My continuous professional development has included 280 hours of Hypnotherapy Training, 270 hours of Psychodrama Training, 300 hours of personal therapy in Hypnotherapy and Existential Therapy and more than 200 hours of Systemic and Family Constellation Therapy.

I started my clinical work in psychology in Hungary, providing care for oncology patients recovering from their surgery. Following my relocation to the UK in 2019, I helped underserved communities (asylum seekers) before starting to work for the NHS in 2020.

Since then, I have been working in the NHS in secondary care in Acute Inpatient Adult Mental Health Services and in Community Based Services as a Counselling Psychologist. I have been providing treatment for people experiencing mild to severe mental health difficulties, most of whom have unfortunately had to experience difficult or traumatic upbringing and/or struggle to find their strengths or resources to live a fulfilling life.
