About me

I am an experienced psychologist with over twenty five years of working alongside adults, children, and families through a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. My work spans NHS and private settings, including adult mental health, perinatal services, child and family teams, and specialist parent-infant services. I have taken senior positions, developed services and supervised teams and individuals in the NHS and private sector.

My therapeutic approach is primarily psychodynamic, with a strong focus on understanding how early experiences, relationships, and unconscious patterns shape emotional life and current difficulties. I have extensive experience supporting adults with complex and longstanding issues, as well as working therapeutically with children and young people from the early years through to primary school age.

A central part of my practice involves helping parents and caregivers make sense of their own experiences, their relationships with their children, and the emotional worlds they share. This work is grounded in relational-based thinking and an understanding of early development, supporting deeper insight, emotional growth, and healthier relationships over time.

I offer a thoughtful, compassionate, and collaborative way of working, tailoring therapy to each individual or family. I aim to create a safe, respectful space where people of all ages feel heard and understood and where meaningful and lasting change can develop.

Please see below for more specific details about how I can support you:

Adult Therapy

We all learn about the world from the relationships and environment in which we grew up. This creates a template of what we expect to happen with other people and determines to a large extent how we relate to ourselves, in particular our emotions.

Individual therapy seeks to place the difficulties you are currently experiencing in the context of your whole life and by doing so, provides relief. It enables greater understanding of what has led you to feel as you do and to develop the particular ways of coping that you have.

By facing emotion, we learn gradually that it is bearable, that it does not need to be managed or pushed away. This frees up our minds and emotional energy to be more present in our daily lives and helps to protect against becoming overwhelmed by what we feel.

Therapy with Children;

The different types of therapy may be individual play therapy for your child, joint play sessions and parent focused sessions. Individual therapy is when it seems beneficial for your child to have a space separate from other relationships in their daily life to begin to think about, make sense of and resolve the difficulties they are experiencing. Individual session enables them to express what they may feel and think in an unhindered way.

Joint sessions with you and your child focus around the communications of your child, which will, largely take place through the medium of play, noticing their ways of interacting, which also prompts conversation. By paying attention, we can begin to see how they view the world and their relationships. Your presence is crucial in helping them to begin to develop healthy ways to manage what they feel, as by being actively interested in the mind of your child, this lets them know that whatever they feel and think is bearable.

Along with the joint sessions, separate adult sessions allow you to talk about the challenges you face as a parent and understand the strong feelings that your child inevitably stirs up in you. In combination, this helps to build a stronger relationship between you, for you to feel more confident as a parent, for your child to feel happier within themselves and for their difficulties to ease.
