About me
I am a Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon based in Edinburgh. My specialist practice is dedicated entirely to the hand and wrist, and I hold both the British and European Diplomas in Hand Surgery.
I manage the full breadth of age-related (degenerative), sporting and traumatic hand conditions. My private practice reflects my NHS work as a Consultant at the Lothian Hand Unit at St John's Hospital in Livingston (NHS Lothian). I am especially interested in hand and wrist arthritis (including base of thumb), Dupuytren's disease, arthroscopic (keyhole) wrist surgery, sports injuries (including bone, tendon and ligament injury) and nerve compression syndromes (including carpal and cubital tunnel).
I provide compassionate and evidence-based surgical care and I always prioritise non-surgical treatments before considering surgery. I have written book chapters on hand surgery topics and published in leading scientific journals, including the Journal of Hand Surgery (European volume). In 2019, I was selected to join the UK organising committee of the London 2022 triennial world congress of the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH).
Having graduated from King's College London (Guy's, King's College & St Thomas' Hospitals), University of London, in 2007, I completed my orthopaedic residency training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore) training programme in London. This provided specialist training at leading hospitals, including the Royal Free, Great Ormond Street and Stoke Mandeville. During my residency, I was President of the British Orthopaedic Trainees' Association (BOTA) and a Council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).
Following my residency, I completed two years of advanced subspecialist orthoplastic hand and wrist fellowship training at the Lothian Hand Unit (St John's Hospital) and the hand unit at Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire. With travel awards from the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) and the BOA, I advanced my experience in arthroscopic (keyhole) wrist surgery and other techniques with travelling fellowships in Paris (Institut de la Main), Barcelona (Institut Kaplan) and Oslo (Sykehuset stfold).
I maintain a strong interest in surgical education, including the training of current and future surgeons. I am regularly invited to teach on UK and international courses, including in Dubai, Hong Kong and Strasbourg. Currently, I am a tutor for the University of Edinburgh's Masters (ChM) in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and on the organising committee of the BSSH flagship Instructional Course in Hand Surgery. I was a Council member of the International Wrist Arthroscopy Society (IWAS) for the period 2022-2025.
