About me
Dr Halfpenny is a Specialist Consultant in Spinal and Pain Medicine.
He can provide rapid diagnostic, imaging and treatment options to patients who suffer with both acute and long-standing spinal pain. He is particularly interested in managing patients whose symptoms have become concerning, uncontrolled or disabling. He can provide advice on optimal pain medication, alongside other modalities of treatment, to provide a truly bespoke management plan.
Dr Halfpenny utilises a holistic approach when assessing patients, taking into consideration age, ongoing medical conditions, level of function as well as individual aims and lifestyle. He is of the opinion that every patient is individual, and he is happy to provide bespoke pain management pathways for his patients, drawing on his experience of working in multidisciplinary teams. Adopting a collaborative approach to pain management with his patients ensures that individual expectations are realistic and can be delivered.
Dr Halfpenny obtained his undergraduate degree MBBCh in 1990 from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa where he graduated with Full Blue sporting colours in both gymnastics and springboard diving. He underwent further specialist training in anaesthesia (FRCA) at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and was later invited to undertake a prestigious lecturing post where he conducted his early pain research. He then undertook a fellowship in Advanced Pain Management being one of the first trainees in the UK to do so. This ultimately lead to admission as a Fellow to the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FFPMRCA)
He was appointed as a Consultant in Pain Medicine at the renowned St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Homerton Hospital. He was instrumental in the development of the City and Hackney back pain service where he worked closely with physiotherapists and psychologists to deliver integrated care to his patients. He has continued to provide innovation to his clinical practice having established regular multidisciplinary pain clinics in addition to providing cutting edge interventional therapies including the use of orthobiologicals (PRP).
He has published and continues to lecture at both national and international meetings in the field of pain medicine.
He has regular clinics at King Edward VII Hospital with interventional procedures taking place at King Edward VII Hospital and OneWelbeck Surgery Centre. .
