About me

I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist with over 25 years experience of seeing clients.

Therapy provides you a time and a place in order to speak and be heard, and the opportunity to deal with your personal issues - whatever they may be - and develop insight into them.

In therapy you begin to expand your awareness and build understanding regarding these issues in order to either adapt to them, or in some way move on from them. Such insights can vary from the minor to the profound, and will derive from careful reflection, dialogue, or perhaps from moments of spontaneous understanding either inside or outside of sessions.

Therapists offer their clients a form of non-threatening and, at the same time, focussed attention. If your therapist is attuned enough, then the listening itself can move beyond just being a passive understanding, and can become a form of communication, such that you can sense how your therapist is understanding or receiving what you are saying in the process of your session. This mode of active listening, is one of the fundamental skills I am always attempting with my clients.

Your therapist will offer you their own comments, insights or interpretations. An interpretation is an explanation, or view, about a particular behaviour pattern, issue or situation. You will know when these interpretations are helpful as they will be in tune with your experience, and will strike a note of truth within you.

The amount of dialogue you have with your therapist depends upon various factors, including how your personality and theirs combine, and the therapist's training and approach to psychotherapy. For example, my own sessions tend to include quite a lot of dialogue with clients, whereas a purely psychoanalytic approach would typically have less verbal interaction.
