About me
Dr Russell Franks is a Consultant Cardiologist based in Oxford. He has extensive experience in all aspects of general cardiology, including the assessment and management of chest pain, angina, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, and high blood pressure. His subspecialist interests include valvular heart disease and advanced echocardiography and cardiac CT.
His practice is guided by a commitment to personalised medicine, ensuring that treatment decisions are based on a careful balance of clinical evidence, patient values, and the full range of available therapeutic options.
At the John Radcliffe Hospital, Dr Franks leads the clinical echocardiography service, manages patients with a full range of cardiac conditions and is a specialist member of both the Structural Heart Team and the Endocarditis Team. In these roles, he diagnoses and manages patients with complex structural and valvular heart disease, as well as those with heart valve infections.
Dr Franks has a particular interest and expertise in minimally invasive (keyhole) valve procedures, including mitral edge to edge repair (Mitraclip), tricuspid edge-to-edge repair (TriClip), transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVI), and transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement. He also has advanced expertise across a full range of cardiac imaging, including transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE), stress echocardiography and cardiac CT.
Dr Franks graduated with honours in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 2009. Following medical rotations in Manchester and London, he trained in cardiology in Northwest London, based at the internationally renowned Hammersmith Hospital.
Dr Franks holds a PhD from King's College London and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications. He lectures both nationally and internationally and is involved with medical training and education at Oxford University Hospitals.
