About me

Mr Shanaka Senevirathna is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialised in knee surgery. He treats a wide range of conditions affecting the knee, including soft tissue injuries, osteoarthritis, adolescent knee pathology, and general trauma. He has a particular interest in patellofemoral disorders in young adults and is experienced in both surgical and non-surgical approaches.

Mr Senevirathna offers treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal repair, cartilage restoration procedures, knee arthroscopy, partial and total knee replacements, as well as joint preservation and realignment surgeries including osteotomy. He also performs trauma surgery and stabilisation of complex lower limb fractures.

Mr Senevirathna has been practicing since 2005 and joined the NHS in 2006. He currently serves as a Consultant Knee Surgeon at Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital in the West Midlands. He is also the Educational Lead for Senior Fellow Doctors in the Orthopaedic Department at Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust.

He has undergone advanced fellowship training in soft tissue knee surgery and knee arthroplasty at world-renowned institutions including the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, Oswestry Orthopaedic Hospital, and Royal Derby Hospital. He also completed specialist training at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

In addition to his clinical practice, Mr Senevirathna is actively involved in research and has contributed to National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-funded projects. He has published and presented his work nationally and internationally in the fields of knee surgery and general orthopaedic surgery.

Overall Mr Senevirathna has performed over 500 knee replacements, 150 partial knee replacements, over 125 ACL and over 100 Meniscal repairs.
