About me
Miss Annabel Shaw is a Colorectal and General Surgical Consultant, with a special interest in laparoscopic (keyhole) for diseases of the bowel, including cancers of the colon and rectum.
She also provides treatment for benign conditions such as diverticular disease, anorectal conditions including haemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal abscesses and anal fissure. She performs multiple surgical options for treatment of haemorrhoids, anal fistulas and Botox for anal fissures, as well as providing outpatient and non-operative management for such conditions.
Miss Shaw has a strong passion for endoscopic procedures, and is a JAG-accredited advanced endoscopy practitioner, performing colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and OGD (upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy). She carries out advanced techniques for endoscopic removal of large polyps of the bowel (EMR / ESD). She also performs transanal excision of early rectal cancers (TEM), another minimally invasive and organ-preserving option for the management of early rectal cancers.
She has completed research into the diagnosis and management of early colorectal cancer, and founded the multicentre PRESERVE trial, which aims to improve identification of early rectal cancers suitable for organ-preserving local excision. Her research fellowship was completed at Croydon University Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospital. She has presented at multiple national and international conferences, which she continues to regularly attend to ensure to keep up to date with ongoing research and developments in her specialist field.
Miss Shaw set up the Polyp MDT at Croydon University Hospital, which has now been integrated into the regular Colorectal Cancer MDT, which she co-leads.
She has a strong interest in teaching and training, and is the Endoscopy Training Lead at Croydon University Hospital.
Miss Shaw qualified from St. George's Hospital Medical School, and completed higher surgical training in South West London. She obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 2018. She was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon in 2022 at Croydon University Hospital.
In her spare time, she enjoys cycling, music, watching rugby and being outside with her husband and son.
