About me

Prof MacCarthy completed his undergraduate training at the University of Bristol, gaining a First Class Honours BSc in 1988 and MBChB with Honours in 1991. His general medical and cardiological training was in Oxford and then at the University Hospital of Wales. In 1996 he was awarded an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship to enable his research into endothelial function and was awarded a PhD by the University Hospital of Wales in 2000. He went on to train in coronary intervention at King’s College Hospital and attained a BHF Advanced Training Scholarship and a Wellcome Trust Travel Award to fund an International Interventional Fellowship at the OLV Cardiac Centre in Aalst, Belgium.

In 2003 he was appointed as Consultant Cardiologist at King’s College Hospital and Hon. Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at King’s College London School of Medicine. He was responsible for the development of the primary angioplasty service at King’s and is the lead cardiologist in the very successful trans-catheter aortic valve (TAVI) programme. He has served as an international Proctor for TAVI and taught 14 UK Teaching Hospitals the technique. Since this, he has established the Mitral Valve trans-catheter programme at King's, which now has one of the highest volumes of MitraClip procedures in the UK.

In 2007, Dr MacCarthy was appointed Clinical Lead in Cardiology at King’s College Hospital and from 2012-2015 he was Clinical Director of Cardiovascular Services at King's. In 2014 he was appointed Professor of Interventional Cardiology by King's College London. In 2016 he was appointed the KCH Lead for the KHP Cardiovascular Institute project.

In 2010 he became the Cardiology representative on the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) of the London Bridge Hospital and established the Cardiovascular Multidisciplinary Team meeting at LBH. This year he was appointed Deputy Chair of the London Bridge Hospital MAC. He was Clinical Director of Cardiac Services at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital from 2012-2019. He is the Chair of the Pan-London Heart Attack Centre Group and Chair of the BCIS Structural Working Group.

Research interests

Research interests include applied coronary physiology, LV function and emerging interventional therapy (incl trans-catheter valve therapy and primary angioplasty). He has published research in high ranking journals and has been successful in obtaining peer-reviewed funding.

Dr MacCarthy also supervises many multicentre studies, is a Section Editor for HEART and is International Consulting Editor for EuroIntervention.
