About me

Dr Wijesurendra is a Consultant Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist. He has particular expertise in managing heart arrhythmias, or electrical disorders of the heart rhythm. He completed medical training at Cambridge University with several scholarships and distinctions. He moved to Oxford to undertake a PhD and training in Cardiology, including advanced training in all aspects of the management of cardiac rhythm disorders. He works jointly at the John Radcliffe Hospital and at the University of Oxford.

Each year he sees and treats hundreds of patients with rhythm disorders such as atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation. One of the key treatments that he offers is catheter ablation, a procedure in which a catheter is inserted into the heart via a vein. Heat energy delivered from the tip of the catheter modifies the problem tissue and restores normal heart rhythm. This treatment can be used as an alternative to long-term rhythm stabilising medication.

The patients that Dr Wijesurendra sees will typically have one or more of the following: a fast or irregular heartbeat or palpitation, ectopic or 'skipped' beats, a slow heartbeat, dizzy spells, blackouts, breathlessness, fatigue, or concerns regarding cardiovascular risk. In addition to undertaking catheter ablation, Dr Wijesurendra also implants and follows-up pacemakers and implanted cardiac defibrillators (ICDs).
