About me

Hello, I'm John, a BACP-accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist with several thousand hours of experience supporting adults through a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges.

I specialise in evidence-based online therapy, offering sessions via video or phone so support can be accessed in a flexible and practical way.
I favour a collaborative, client-led approach in which you set the agenda, while I draw on integrative therapy principles, cognitive behavioural techniques, psychodynamic theory, and evidence-based practice to help you work towards meaningful change.

My clinical work is informed by ongoing academic research, including research at the University of Oxford focused on planning strategies for mood, resilience, and behaviour change. This allows me to integrate up-to-date psychological science with practical therapeutic work, ensuring that the support I offer is grounded, relevant, and evidence-based.

Clients often describe me as warm, supportive, and easy to talk to, while also valuing that I am clear, focused, and goal-oriented when needed. Once we agree on a goal, I am committed to helping you work towards it using practical, research-informed strategies.

I frequently use integrative cognitive behavioural therapy in my practice. We will explore how patterns of thinking influence emotional experience and behaviour, and I will help you learn how to question and respond differently to unhelpful thoughts, supporting changes in emotional experience over time. I will also work with you to understand where current difficulties may have originated and what can be done to address them. This often involves identifying why certain patterns persist, then developing ways to regulate physical responses, thoughts, behaviours, and environmental stressors, helping you develop a greater sense of control and resilience.

My approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing on cognitive behavioural therapy, behavioural activation, psychodynamic and person-centred principles, and solution-focused coaching. We usually begin with what is happening in the present, building practical tools for change, while also exploring how past experiences may be shaping current difficulties.

I work exclusively with adults and support a broad range of concerns, including anxiety, low mood and depression, stress and burnout, anger and emotional regulation, low self-esteem, bereavement, men's issues, difficulties in relationships, social anxiety, and a general sense of life fatigue or loss of direction.

Your first session is low-pressure and collaborative. It's an opportunity to explore what has brought you to therapy and to see whether working together feels like a good fit. You will set the pace, doing most of the talking, while I ask focused questions to understand your experience more fully. Together, we will begin identifying patterns in thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and where helpful I may introduce a simple, evidence-based technique to offer early insight or relief. By the end of the session, we will outline potential goals and discuss a tailored way of working together. There is no obligation to continue unless it feels right for you.

Clients often report early improvements within the first month as we start working in a focused, structured way.

I have worked within the UK NHS, delivering both long-term psychodynamic therapy and short-term, targeted interventions through the IAPT programme in metropolitan London. Working in this context provided extensive experience with a wide range of presentations and with clients from diverse cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds, supporting a culturally sensitive approach to clinical work.

I now work primarily online, supporting clients across different backgrounds. My specialist training in online therapy ensures that video- and telephone-based work is conducted in a way that is safe, professional, and effective. In-person appointments are subject to availability.
