About me

I am a consultant gastroenterologist with more than 35 years in medicine. I see private patients at Spire Murrayfield Hospital Wirral, Spire Healthcare Abergele Clinic and Spire Yale Chesney Court in Wrexham.

My particular interests are endoscopy (gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy), inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, food intolerances, rectal bleeding and haemorrhoids, indigestion, Barrett's oesophagus, and upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding.

I aim to explain things clearly, base my treatment on the best available evidence, and always put my patients first. I know an appointment can feel daunting, so I take the time to listen and make sure you leave with a clear plan.

I trained at St Thomas's Hospital Medical School in London, qualifying in 1990. After early training in the South West of England, I specialised in gastroenterology at King's College Hospital in London. I later worked as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool, combining patient care with teaching and research.

In 1999, I became a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Mid Cheshire Hospitals Trust in Crewe. There I helped set up services for patients with hepatitis B and C, alcohol-related illness and inflammatory bowel disease, as well as a nurse-led clinic for iron deficiency anaemia. I also led the gastroenterology and endoscopy departments and became the first Clinical Director of the Cheshire Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

Since 2015, I have worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital, where I am part of the team providing round-the-clock emergency care for gastrointestinal bleeding across Cheshire. I now work part-time in the NHS, running outpatient clinics for patients with inflammatory bowel disease as well as general gastroenterology problems such as indigestion (dyspepsia), irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and abdominal pain. We also offer a dedicated patient email service to make our IBD service easier to access.

Alongside my clinical work, I am a Medical Assessor for the Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG), checking that endoscopy units across the UK meet national standards for safety and quality. I also prepare independent medical reports for the Public Service Ombudsman, giving impartial expert advice when patients or families have concerns about their care.
