About me

Miss Anna Gruener is a multi-award-winning Consultant Cataract Surgeon and Neuro-Ophthalmologist in Nottingham, and one of the most extensively fellowship-trained eye surgeons in the UK.
She leads cataract surgery training at Queen's Medical Centre, teaching the operation to the next generation of eye surgeons. Colleagues refer her their most complex and high-risk cataract cases, including eyes with co-existing glaucoma, inflammation or optic nerve disease. She performs regular high-volume cataract surgery, with complication rates below the national benchmark. She audits her surgical outcomes and is happy to discuss them with any patient who wishes.
From your first consultation to your final post-operative review, every appointment is with Miss Gruener herself. She also personally telephones every patient two days after surgery, ensuring continuity of care throughout your treatment.
Miss Gruener offers the full range of modern intraocular lenses, from standard monofocal lenses to toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses. Where appropriate, astigmatism and presbyopia can be corrected at the same time as the cataract. Every option is discussed objectively, and where a standard monofocal lens is genuinely the best choice, she will say so.
Successful cataract surgery begins with the correct diagnosis. Not every reduction in vision is caused by cataract, and understanding why vision has deteriorated is just as important as performing the operation itself. Miss Gruener is triple-fellowship-trained in Glaucoma, Inflammatory Eye Disease (Uveitis) and Neuro-Ophthalmology, a combination held by only a select few surgeons worldwide. This means conditions that could affect the outcome of surgery are identified before the operation, not after it.
She trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the Medical Eye Unit at St Thomas', the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Western Eye Hospital in London. She then completed the prestigious T.F.C. Frost Fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Her research has been published in The Lancet, JAMA Ophthalmology, Neurology, Retina and the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. In recognition of this work she was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her awards include the Ivor Levy Prize from the British Isles Neuro-Ophthalmology Club, a research prize from the European Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, and the Nottingham University Hospitals Individual Clinical Ambulatory Care Award.
She also established and leads the Neuro-Ophthalmology Service at Nottingham University Hospitals. She accepts referrals for optic nerve disorders, unexplained visual loss, pupil abnormalities, and visual problems caused by pituitary, skull base and other brain conditions, and is often asked to provide second and third opinions in complex or undiagnosed cases.
