About me

Dr Yonel is a consultant psychiatrist with over 10years' psychiatry experience.

Dr Yonel received his undergraduate medical education at Imperial College, University of London receiving a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and BSc in in Medical Science with Management. He practiced in paediatrics prior to entering specialist training in psychiatry.

Dr Yonel completed specialist psychiatric training in the southwest London and St Georges rotational scheme. He achieved postgraduate qualification of Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists by examination in 2015. He is eligible to act as an Approved Clinician and Responsible Clinician within the meaning of the Mental Health Act 1983, and he is approved by the Secretary of State as a doctor certified as having special experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorder under s12(2) Mental Health Act 1983.

He specialises in providing assessment and management of a range of mental health disorders including anxiety disorders, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, perinatal disorders, somatoform disorders, dual diagnosis (co-exiting drug/alcohol misuse and mental disorder) trauma and stress related disorders.

He has developed special expertise in managing mental health difficulties associated with physical illness and complex mood disorders including difficult to treat depression. He was involved in development of a specialist affective disorders and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Service within the NHS.

In his NHS role Dr Yonel currently works as consultant psychiatrist in the START team, a small award winning, multi-disciplinary assessment team providing outreach for street homeless people in Lambeth, Southwark and Croydon. The team treat patients with severe mental health problems who are unable or unwilling to use mainstream mental health services. Prior to that he spent five years as a consultant psychiatrist providing mental health assessment and treatment for patients presenting to the Emergency Department and medical wards for an acute medical hospital. He is a trainer recognised by the General Medical Council and is involved in the development of junior doctors.

He believes in providing a collaborative, relational approach to care to maximise recovery.
