About me
Mr Kellett developed a keen interest in the biomechanics of the spine and related spinal injuries during his teens playing county cricket as the spearhead of the bowling attack. An affinity for spinal surgery was evident early in his Neurosurgical training which has provided focus and vast experience over a 15 year period encompassing all disciplines within spinal surgery.
Mr Kellett undertook Neurosurgical and Complex Spinal Surgery training under world-renowned names in centres including The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, Atkinson Morley Department of Neurosurgery, London and Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. Neurosurgical training has provided Mr Kellett with a solid foundation in microsurgical and minimally invasive techniques.
'I am lucky to have worked in so many prestigious centres with inspirational trainers. Having such widespread experience has ensured that I have observed the full spectrum of spinal pathology but also the many different approaches that can be employed to deal with spinal conditions.'
Specifically, Mr Kellett's interests include minimally invasive spinal surgery using the microscope and endoscope, day case spinal fusion and spinal surgery under local/spinal anaesthesia.
'Surgery is controlled trauma. The approaches I employ are utilised to minimise trauma hence, my interest in minimally invasive spinal surgery. MIS reduces operative and anaesthetic time whilst minimising trauma thereby reducing infection rates, postoperative pain and hospital stay. I am the only surgeon in Leeds to have performed cervical spine surgery under local anaesthetic and successful day case MIS lumbar fusion.'
Mr Kellett has published extensively on areas of expertise including Cervical Myelopathy and Cauda Equina Syndrome.
Service improvement is another keen area of interest for Mr Kellett. He is currently in the process of developing a regional network for complex adult dysraphic patients. 'Not only are these patients challenging from a surgical perspective but they have complex needs that are best managed through a regional multidisciplinary approach.'
Fundamentally, spinal patients are a very heterogeneous group. Through his keen attention to detail and extensive training Mr Kellett is able to tailor individual treatment plans to meet the needs of his patients whilst employing minimally invasive techniques.
Mr Kellett also has a full-time NHS practice as a substantive Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon based in Leeds. He is dedicated to his wife and daughter whom he enjoys spending time with to relax as well as watching sport and has recently taken up Triathlon.
'It is super to be back up north surrounded by the places and people I love who will benefit from the amazing opportunities and training I have experienced to date.'
