About me
Dr. Kusuma is a consultant urologist and robotic surgeon with specialist expertise in prostate cancer, bladder cancer, general urology, and robotic urological surgery. He graduated from the University of Health Sciences, India, in 2000 and completed his surgical and urological training in 2010. He further refined his urology skills at leading centres including Christie Hospital in Manchester and Guys and St. Thomas' Hospital in London.
Following a uro-oncology fellowship in Colchester, Essex, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Urology) in 2015. He went on to complete a fellowship in robotic surgery at the European Robotic Urology Section (ERUS) accredited training centre in Guildford, Surrey.
Dr. Kusuma was appointed Consultant Urologist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, in 2019, where he led the trans-perineal prostate biopsy service and played a key leadership role in securing two Da Vinci robotic systems.
He currently practices at The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, Guildford, where he delivers comprehensive pelvic cancer services using advanced minimally invasive techniques. Alongside clinical work, he has a strong academic profile with over 80 peer-reviewed publications, cited across 600+ journals and textbooks. His well-recognised work on patient satisfaction and decision regret in prostate cancer is widely used for counselling patients.
Dr. Kusuma holds several academic and leadership roles. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Surrey (appointed 2024) and serves on the editorial board of Therapeutic Advances in Urology. He has presented at numerous national and international conferences and is a peer reviewer for several leading journals.
His research excellence has been acknowledged with the CRN Green Shoots Award and the NIHR Research Support Award for his contribution to the MASTERY trial.
Passionate about mentoring, he has supported international medical graduates through clinical attachments, coordinated NHS induction, and mentored trainees via the ERUS fellowship programme�100% of whom have progressed to consultant roles. Since 2022, he has actively coached BAUS Specialty and Associate Specialist and Trust Urologist (STU) members preparing for CESR/portfolio pathways, with all mentees successfully appointed to consultant posts.
Dr. Kusuma also engages in public health education, having co-authored bladder cancer factsheets with Prostate Cancer UK and developed patient-facing resources. He is committed to promoting inclusive, informed, and equitable care through open days and community outreach.
