About me

Ajoy Bardhan is a Consultant Dermatologist practising privately in Edgbaston, Birmingham. He trained in London, Cambridge and the West Midlands prior to being appointed a consultant at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), home to one of the largest and busiest specialist dermatology departments in the country. He prides himself on providing a relaxed and affable approach to addressing skin problems, regardless of severity.

Ajoy read medicine at Imperial College London, intercalating with a degree in Haematological sciences. Postgraduate physicianly training ensued at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, followed by a move to the West Midlands to pursue specialist training in Dermatology. He undertook a fellowship in the National Commissioning Group-funded ultra specialised Epidermolysis Bullosa service at UHB, where he was subsequently appointed as a consultant in 2019. His clinics cover a broad spectrum of presentations encompassing skin cancer, skin surgery, severe inflammatory skin disease and rare genetic skin disorders.

Ajoy is an active member of the Dermatology Research Group at the University of Birmingham, focussed upon the rare inherited skin fragility syndromes collectively known as Epidermolysis Bullosa. He is interested in ensuring fundamental scientific exploration at the bench-to-bedside interface (and vice versa) translates to personalised patient-centred care that is underpinned by robust cutting-edge evidence, and particularly enjoys contributing to local, regional, national and international dermatological discourse. He has been invited to lecture and present to undergraduate and postgraduate audiences internationally, has sat upon nationally co-ordinated appointment panels for aspiring dermatology registrars, is an accredited educational supervisor for dermatology trainees, and is now a member of the question setting group for the national dermatology specialty certification examination. He is also lead for undergraduate dermatology education at the University of Birmingham.

His clinical and research interests are complemented by serving as clinical director for the largest dermatology department in the Midlands at Solihull Hospital, past membership of the regional genomic rare disease advisory board, and serving as secretary for the Midland Dermatology Society. He serves on several national committees, having previously been a member of the British Association of Dermatologists' committee for Therapeutics & Guidelines (T&G) and currently sits on the steering committee for Skin Genetics, as well as being an elected member of the British Association of Dermatologists' Executive committee.
