About me

Mr James Barnes is a consultant surgeon with specialist interests in parathyroid surgery, kidney transplantation, and vascular access for dialysis. He offers private consultations and procedures at Priory Hospital Edgbaston and The Harborne Hospital Edgbaston.

He treats patients with a range of parathyroid conditions, including primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism, and has experience in complex and repeat (redo) parathyroid surgery. He also looks after patients with hormone conditions such as multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN).

Mr Barnes completed his medical degree at the University of Warwick in 2007 and trained as a surgeon in the West Midlands. He went on to undertake a clinical research fellowship at the Oxford Transplant Centre and was awarded a DPhil (Doctor of Philosophy) by the University of Oxford for his work on pancreas transplant monitoring.

Alongside his private practice, Mr Barnes holds NHS consultant posts at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and is a member of the British Transplantation Society, the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons, and the Vascular Access Society of Britain and Ireland.

He is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC No. 6160449).
