About me

Mr Ian Long is a counselling and peer support Psychotherapist registered with the NCPS. He has worked closely with Professor Rob Bor in the pioneering role of peer support in the aviation industry since 2017 and he supports clients with the Centre for Aviation Psychology. Ian works as an integrative counsellor, based on the Person-Centred approach, the client is the expert of self, as we seek greater self-awareness and self-worth, further working with cognitive-behaviour therapy and psychodynamic therapy.

Ian has worked for 40 years in aviation. He flew operationally in the RAF and is now an experienced commercial pilot, flying for British Airways. He is an experienced practitioner, and the session would be either in-person or virtually, but attending would support more creative therapy, Gestalt and Psychosynthesis. Ian's interest is supporting adult mental health. He has practice in holding the working alliance and reviewing attachment theory to inform relationships, for example and this can be reviewed through the GROW model, as we understand our goals, realise our reality, work collaboratively to understand options as we will our way forward.

Ian has a practical and collaborative approach; theory informs practice and his ethical and kind approach promotes learning and understanding in a safe space. There is a particular interest to support performance and resilience, and broader reflection can consider Human Factors: identifying the knowledge, skills and attitude to work on the competencies of decision making, leadership and situational awareness, for example.

Ian has spearheaded community support work; he has presented at specialist conferences and he is keen to share learning and experience in the developing world of talking therapy.
