About me

Dr Sapna Shah was appointed Consultant Kidney Doctor (Nephrologist) at King's College Hospital, London in 2009. She has a weekly chronic kidney disease clinic and has particular expertise in managing patients with co-existing liver disease. She has extensive experience in caring for patients needing dialysis, with autoimmune diseases of the kidneys such as glomerulonephritis and lupus, as well as managing hypertension and diabetic kidney disease. As the lead for the kidney transplantation service, she routinely assesses patient's suitability for transplantation and optimises the long term care of her kidney transplant patients.

She is also part of the on-call rota for inpatient care at King's College Hospital and is experienced in all aspects of kidney disease, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease and transplantation.

Sapna qualified in medicine (MBChB) with Honours from the University of Bristol in 1999 and then began her training in the South Thames Renal training scheme in London. During this time, she completed a PhD by Queen Mary's, University of London in the discipline of kidney transplantation. In 2009, she was awarded her Specialty Certificate in Nephrology by the Royal College of Physicians. In 2014, she was appointed Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).

Sapna is the research lead for renal at King's College Hospital. She is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King's College London. Her research interests include reducing the progression of chronic kidney disease, optimising treatment for renal anaemia and glomerulonephritis particularly IgA nephropathy. She is also investigating ways of promoting kidney transplantation and improving transplant outcomes. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the British Transplantation Society Council.

Sapna has also co-chaired work-streams for the London Kidney Network with aim of improving the care for kidney patients across London and reducing inequity. She is passionate about empowering patients to make decisions about their care and promotes healthy kidneys by improving diet and exercise.

Kidney problems are often detected after routine blood and urine tests. Other symptoms include high blood pressure, swelling of the legs and tiredness. During your consultation with Sapna, she will take a detailed history of your symptoms and the impact on you. She may arrange further blood and urine tests along with an ultrasound scan. Occasionally a CT or MRI scan is also needed. If a kidney biopsy is needed, Sapna can organise this after discussing the risks and benefits with you.

She will then explain the underlying cause of your symptoms and kidney problems before advising on how best to manage the condition. Management of kidney diseases often include lifestyle changes as well as medication. Your treatment will be individualised and tailored to your needs.

If you have already been diagnosed with kidney disease, Sapna can provide further assessment and a second opinion.

If you are being considered for kidney transplantation, Sapna can offer further education on transplantation and how to keep yourself in the best physical and mental state to undergo transplantation.

Kidney doctors (nephrologists) and urologists often work closely together to manage conditions such as kidney stones. Sapna will liaise with the urology consultants as needs to ensure that your care is optimised.
