About me
Matt Hampton is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at Sheffield Teaching hospitals, with a private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital and the Thornbury Hospital. His practice specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including arthroscopy, primary and revision ligament reconstruction, patella dislocations, cartilage repair and transplantation, osteotomy, and primary partial and total knee arthroplasty.
Matt aims to help keep his patients fit and active through both non-operative and operative interventions.
He is passionate about a patient specific approach to surgery, offering joint preserving techniques whenever possible.
When required to perform total knee arthopalsty in young active patients Matt will discuss the use of uncemented knee replacements over traditional cemented replacements, reducing the rate of re-do knee replacement surgery in the future.
At Sheffield Teaching Hospitals he offers a complex tertiary referral practice for knee ligament injuries, knee cartilage repair / transplants, osteotomy and patella stabilisation surgery.
Matt is one of a handful of fellowship trained surgeon's in the North of England able to offer trochleoplasty surgery for the management of severe trochlea dysplasia. This condition, which results in recurrent dislocations of the patella, can only be effectively managed by deepening the groove at the end of the femur (trochlea).
Matt completed his higher surgical training on the South Yorkshire rotation, he was awarded his completion of training in 2022. He then went on to complete prestigious fellowships specialising solely in knee surgery at the Guys and St Thomas Hospitals in London and the internationally renowned Robert Jones Agnes Hunt orthopaedic hospital in Oswestry. He also spent time learning advanced and specialist sports knee interventions from world renowned surgeons in America (Brian Cole) and Canada (Alan Getgood).
Alongside his clinical work Matt is heavily involved in clinical research striving to improve patient outcomes in knee surgery, with over 50 peer reviewed publications and both national and international presentations. Matt served as the research fellow for the British Association for Surgery of the knee (BASK) and is also a member at large for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA).
Matt is actively engaged in training the next generation of knee surgeons. Alongside training specialist registrars he runs a fellowship with his colleagues at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to enable them to treat patients with knee conditions to the best of their ability.
Outside of work Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and young family and playing a round of golf when he can.
