About me

Mr James Smith is a highly qualified, professional and compassionate Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, who will place you at the centre of your treatment. In addition to his private work, he has a full-time NHS practice based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Having attended secondary school in Bristol, and medical school at Imperial College London, Mr Smith completed his specialist orthopaedic training on the highly regarded Severn Deanery training programme. He completed two further years of subspecialty fellowship training, firstly in major orthopaedic trauma in Calgary, Canada, and secondly in knee replacement, sports knee surgery, and the management of patellofemoral disorders, at the renowned Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.

Mr Smiths practice comprises the treatment of soft tissue knee injuries (including meniscal tears, cartilage injury, and ligament reconstruction) and arthritic problems, for which he offers osteotomy (realignment surgery) and both partial and total joint replacement. He also has a subspecialty practice in the treatment of kneecap instability.

Mr Smith has an active involvement in research, has multiple journal publications, and has presented his work nationally and internationally. He teaches and sits as faculty at national meetings, and his commitment to remaining contemporary in his practice ensures that he will offer you proven and evidence-based orthopaedic treatments.

When not at work, James enjoys an outdoor lifestyle including cycling, skiing and occasional golf. His greatest pleasure however is spending quality time with his wife and two young children.
