Simon qualified with Honours in 1990 from University of Birmingham. He trained in Paediatric Surgery and Urology at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Liverpool, Royal Melbourne Children's Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne, Australia.

He was appointed Consultant Paediatric Surgeon / Urologist, Alder Hey Childrens NHS Foundation Trust 2003.
He was Clinical Director of Surgery, Cardiac, Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.
He is National Clinical Lead for Paediatric Surgery, Getting It Right First Time, NHS England.
National Clinical Director, Children and Young People, NHS England.

In 2024 he was awarded OBE in the King's New Year Honours list for services to paediatric surgery.
