About me

Ms Satherley was appointed as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in Cardiff & Vale UHB in 2020. She has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of women and men with breast cancer and benign breast conditions, operating on ~150 patients/year.

In addition to undertaking specialist training in all aspects of breast surgery, she has a PhD in Cancer Research and is one of very few breast surgeons to have undertaken formal training in Breast Ultrasound and Mammographic Interpretation and Reporting. In 2021, she graduated from the award-winning PGDiploma Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at UEA. Her unique skill set enables her to provide effective treatment for breast cancer whilst preserving cosmetic outcome wherever possible and enhances her ability to work effectively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver the best care for her patients.

Ms Satherley's aim is to deliver excellent, holistic, individualised, patient-centred care. Experiencing breast/armpit symptoms is understandably very distressing and she understands how daunting it can be to attend clinic. Her one-stop clinic at Spire Cardiff provides rapid access to thorough clinical breast assessment, imaging and biopsy (if required) in a compassionate and caring environment. She prides herself on her ability to listen to patients to fully understand their concerns, to discuss clearly with them any results or investigations, to answer any questions and to support and guide them through any treatment in a professional and caring manner.

As an undergraduate, Ms Satherley was awarded Certificates of Clinical Excellence in Surgery, Medicine and General Practice and an ERASMUS bursary to undertake biomedical research at the University of Oulu in Finland. She was also awarded a bursary by the University of Wales to undertake an intercalated degree in Exercise Sciences from which she graduated with 1st class Honours in 2003.

Ms Satherley entered surgical training in the Wales Deanery in 2007 and was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine Adrian Tanner Prize in Surgery and the Welsh Association of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Prize.

In 2012, she began a PhD with Cardiff University investigating the cellular mechanisms underlying cancer and was awarded the ME Williams Award, the William Morgan Thomas Award and the Michael Banfill Scholarship Award to undertake a clinical and research fellowship at two of the most prestigious academic institutions in Beijing, China. She was awarded a PGCert in Biomedical Research with Distinction in 2014 and her PhD in 2017.

Ms Satherley is passionate about education and training and has taught on over 45 courses for undergraduate medical students, surgical trainees and other healthcare professionals. In 2022, she was appointed as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University where she is Module Lead for Oncology and Surgery for the School of Medicine and Co-Lead for Professionalism. She tutors on the MSc Oncoplastic Breast Surgery programme at UEA and lectures on the postgraduate Breast Imaging programmes at Cardiff University. She has taught extensively on Royal College of Surgeons courses and has published numerous books/chapters on surgery for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. She has recently completed a PGCert in Surgical Education with Imperial College London and is currently undertaking her Diploma studies.

Ms Satherley continues to have a strong research interest and has numerous publications in peer reviewed medical journals. She has presented her work at national and international conferences, including several prize/papers of distinction sessions. She is an active participant in clinical audit, has a keen interest in Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) after breast surgery and is a Principal Investigator for trials at the Breast Centre in CAVUHB.
