About me

Nick Muthiah is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Barts Health and a post-doctoral Clinician Scientist at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London in the Cell and Gene Therapy Group. He also provides complex tertiary care for patients at Bristol Eye Hospital.

He completed undergraduate medical training at Imperial College School of Medicine. During his residency and ophthalmology specialist training in London, he completed a Masters in Surgical Education and undertook a PhD at UCL and Moorfields Eye Hospital. He studied cellular changes in retinal diseases using advanced imaging and worked with colleagues on early translational work in induced pluri-potent stem cells for retinal disease modelling. Mr Muthiah was a visiting fellow at the world-renowned Eye Institute at Medical College of Wisconsin as a Royal College of Ophthalmologists Keeler Scholar. This enabled him to pursue advanced translational retinal research under Professor Joe Carroll and Professor Judy Kim.

Mr Muthiah is fellowship trained in Medical-retinal, Uveitis and Surgical retina. The Medical retina and Uveitis fellowships were undertaken at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Vitreoretinal Fellowship at Bristol Eye Hospital.

Clinically Mr Muthiah, looks after patients with wide ranging retinal diseases: macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and surgical retina (retinal detachments, macular holes, epiretinal membrane and complications from diabetic eye disease which require surgery). He also provides medical and surgical management of Uveitis (inflammatory eye diseases) within a multi-disciplinary team. He provides cataract surgery as well as manages complications of surgery referred from other units.
