About me

Mr Ahilan Kailaya-Vasan is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Clinical Lead for Neurosurgery at King's College Hospital, London, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Mr Kailaya-Vasan specialises in complex spinal surgery, treating a wide range of conditions affecting the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. His expertise includes degenerative spinal disorders, spinal instability, nerve compression, back and neck pain, spinal trauma, and complex spinal reconstruction. He is particularly recognised for his ability to manage challenging spinal conditions requiring highly specialised surgical techniques and multidisciplinary care.

In addition to his spinal practice, Mr Kailaya-Vasan has specialist expertise in neurovascular neurosurgery, including the treatment of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), fistulae, cavernomas, neurovascular compression syndromes and Moyamoya disease. His combined experience in both spinal and neurovascular surgery provides a unique perspective in the management of complex vascular conditions affecting the spine.

Mr Kailaya-Vasan graduated from University College London and completed his higher neurosurgical training in Sheffield and London. He subsequently undertook the Royal College of Surgeons-accredited King's Neurovascular Fellowship, gaining advanced expertise in the treatment of complex cerebrovascular disorders.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Kailaya-Vasan is committed to advancing neurosurgical education and research. He is the current Clinical Lead for Neurosurgery. He served as the Training Programme Director for Neurosurgery in South London and co-directs the King's Neurovascular Fellowship. His research interests encompass both spinal and neurovascular pathology, and as co-lead of the King's NeuroLab, he plays an active role in developing innovative approaches to neurosurgical training and research.

Mr Kailaya-Vasan is dedicated to delivering patient-centred care, ensuring that patients receive clear, comprehensive explanations of their diagnosis and treatment options. He works closely with a multidisciplinary team of specialist clinicians, including neurologists, neuroradiologists, physiotherapists, pain specialists and specialist nurses, to achieve the best possible outcomes and support patients throughout their treatment journey.
