About me
Dr Simone Ciufolini is a consultant psychiatrist working in an acute female inpatient ward at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM), and an honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King's College London.
He has extensive experience in the assessment, management and treatment of common and complex mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, adjustment disorder, and traumatic reactions. He uses an open and non-judgemental approach to understand people's unique story, point of view and suffering. Given his academic interests in neuroimaging, psychosis, trauma, women's health, Dr Ciufolini is very adept in identifying how external factors can impact people's health and recovery. Because of his personal disposition and training in Systemic Psychotherapy and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Dr Ciufolini creates a warm and open session to work along with the person to recognise their experience, strength and resilience and create together an explanation and a support structure to overcome suffering and distress.
Dr Ciufolini trained in Medicine and Psychiatry (both achieved with Honours) at the Sapienza University of Rome, in Italy. During his training he entered an international exchange programme and spent one year at the Department of Psychosis Studies at the IoPPN, King's College London as Research Fellow. After obtaining the specialisation in General Adult Psychiatry (CTT equivalent), Dr Ciufolini was awarded a highly competitive NIHR-BRC Ph.D. fellowship to investigate the impact of childhood trauma on the brain structure and stress response in psychosis. Since completing his Ph.D. Dr Ciufolini has had a dual role as clinician and academic, at SLaM and at the IoPPN, working in General Adult and Liaison Psychiatric, while researching and publishing his work on trauma, stress response, mind and body interaction, pharmacological effect of psychiatric drugs in female patients in high-impact factor peer-reviewed journals.
He is an approved clinical supervisor for junior psychiatrists and Firm Head for medical students at Guy's Hospital, King's College Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital Medical School. He has presented his work at the most prestigious international conferences of psychiatry.
