About me
Mr Francesco Di Maggio is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon specialising in the keyhole (minimally invasive) treatment of upper digestive conditions, in particular acid reflux and hiatus hernia, including large and complex hernias. He leads the anti-reflux service at Croydon University Hospital and treats private patients across South West London.
A large part of Mr Di Maggio's practice is the surgical treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and hiatus hernia. Many patients live for years with reflux not fully controlled by medication, or with the discomfort and swallowing difficulty a larger hiatus hernia can cause. Where surgery is the right option, he offers the full range of modern anti-reflux procedures, including laparoscopic fundoplication and the LINX device, tailoring the choice to the individual. He also has particular expertise in large and complex paraoesophageal hernias and in revisional (redo) surgery for patients whose previous operation has not lasted.
Gallstone disease is one of the most common conditions Mr Di Maggio treats. He offers keyhole gallbladder removal (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) for symptomatic gallstones, inflammation, and related complications, as planned and, where needed, urgent surgery. Hernia surgery is also a substantial part of his practice: he repairs inguinal (groin), femoral, umbilical, epigastric, incisional, and sports hernias, using keyhole techniques where they offer an advantage and open repair where that is the better choice. He also treats achalasia and other swallowing disorders, and is accredited to perform diagnostic upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy).
Working almost entirely by minimally invasive techniques, he aims to give patients less discomfort, a shorter hospital stay, and a quicker return to normal activity than open surgery usually allows. He takes time to ensure each patient understands their condition and options, including the benefits, risks, and what recovery realistically involves, so they share fully in the decision about their treatment.
Mr Di Maggio graduated with honours from the University of Milan-Bicocca, consistently ranked among Italy's top medical schools, and trained in General Surgery at the University of Parma. He subspecialised in upper gastrointestinal surgery as a Senior Clinical Fellow at St Thomas' Hospital, London, one of the UK's leading oesophago-gastric centres. He has carried out research with the Barts Cancer Institute, King's College London, and Imperial College London, and is first author of several published studies. He earned a Master's degree in the Surgery of Humanitarian Emergencies and has worked with Mdecins Sans Frontires in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is an educational and clinical supervisor for surgical trainees in South London.
Mr Di Maggio is a member of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus, the European Foregut Society, the Italian Medical Society of Great Britain, and the British Medical Association. He is a native Italian speaker and fluent in Spanish, and also consults in Portuguese and French for patients who would prefer to discuss their condition in their own language.
